Sometimes the best meals don’t start with a recipe—they start by opening the refrigerator and seeing what needs to be used. Inspired by my friend Chef Annette Tomei of Wander, Eat & Tell, this “no-recipe recipe” is all about keeping things simple, fresh, creative, and delicious.

For my version, I gathered Persian cucumbers, diced jalapeño, fresh pineapple, and the last of our breakfast radishes. From there, it was simply a matter of adding a little lime, fresh herbs, honey, and sunflower seeds to bring everything together. 🥒🍍🌶️🌿🍯🌻

The combination is a wonderful mix of crisp, juicy, sweet, spicy, and fresh. The cucumbers and radishes provide plenty of crunch, while the pineapple adds a naturally sweet bite. A little jalapeño brings some heat, and lime brightens everything up. Fresh herbs and sunflower seeds finish it off with even more flavor and texture.

The beauty of a no-recipe recipe is that there are no strict measurements and no pressure to make it exactly the same way twice. Use what you have, taste as you go, and let your ingredients inspire you. Have a little extra cucumber? Toss it in. A few berries, herbs, or leftover vegetables in the fridge? Give them a try!

It’s also a wonderful approach to reducing food waste. Those last few vegetables sitting in the refrigerator don’t have to become leftovers that get forgotten. With a little imagination, they can become a fresh salad or side dish that feels completely new.

So this time, don’t worry about measuring cups or following a recipe card. Open the fridge, gather what looks good, and make your own no-recipe recipe. That’s where some of the most fun kitchen creativity begins!
